Madison is hosting her homeschool book club again this summer, and this month the kids are reading The Wild Robot together.

We decided to give book club a little more structure this month so it can be something fun for the kids while also helping homeschool moms check a few boxes off their summer learning plans. The kids read at home during the week, then get together to discuss the book, complete activities, and spend time with friends.

Today’s activity includes vocabulary, reading comprehension, and animal adaptations from the story. When I showed Madison the setup, she immediately said, “It feels too much like school.”

The funny thing is, I don’t know if that’s because it actually feels like school or because this style of learning is so normal in our homeschool that anything involving discussion questions automatically gets labeled “school.”

Now I’m curious to see what her friends think. Will they feel like it’s too much school, or will they just see it as a fun activity to do with friends while talking about a book they all love?

Either way, I love finding ways to make learning social, meaningful, and fun.

He’s been helping with lesson prep since day 1 of our relationship. Instead of prepping stuff for 20+ kids, now it’s our two favorite 🤍

Tomorrow’s Percy Jackson school is ready to go.

Mondays look a little different around here. While I’m hooked up to my ozone IV, I like to have independent activities ready for the kids so learning can keep going right beside me.

For this comprehension activity, I hid Percy Jackson questions and answers in our sensory bins. The kids will dig them out, read the cards, and match the questions and answers on the board. It’s hands-on, engaging, and gives them a chance to practice comprehension skills independently.

After that, we’ll listen to more of the audiobook, complete our copywork, start a new project that we’ll work on all week, and tackle our math lesson.

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is finding ways to make learning work with real life. Not every school day looks the same, and that’s okay. Sometimes school happens around appointments, errands, and the unexpected. The flexibility to adapt while still making meaningful progress is one of the biggest gifts of homeschooling.

One thing about homeschooling in Florida, summer is HOT 🥵

By the time summer rolls around, we’re spending way less time outside because it’s either blazing hot, raining, or both. And when we’re stuck inside more, my kids need some structure or we all start going a little feral 😅

That’s why we still do summer learning.

Not because I think my kids need hours of academics every day. I just don’t love spending the first month of the new school year playing catch up after forgetting everything over the summer.

So during the summer, I simplify.

We keep up with math because those skills build on each other and I like to finish our curriculum before moving into the next level. Everything else gets put on pause, and we switch to a themed novel study instead.

This summer = Camp Half-Blood ⚡️🏛️

We’re reading Percy Jackson, listening to audiobooks, doing themed activities, keeping up with math, and calling it good. We still have routine. We still have learning. But it feels lighter, more fun, and way less rigorous than our normal school year rhythm.

And honestly? Summer learning has become one of my favorite parts of homeschooling

Today we pause to remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸❤️

We are incredibly thankful for the courage, service, and selflessness of those who gave so much, and for the families who continue to carry that sacrifice. Because of them, we are able to enjoy freedoms that are easy to take for granted.

Holding deep gratitude in our hearts today and remembering those who served with honor. Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day

My daughter has been hosting a neighborhood homeschool book club and she LOVES having her friends together to talk books but when everyone is reading something different, we realized we needed a little more structure.

So for June, we’re trying something new: everyone votes and reads the SAME book together.

Each week we’ll meet to talk about favorite characters, predictions, funny moments, and everything happening in the story. Throughout the month we’ll add themed crafts, activities, snacks, and all the fun extras. Then if the book has a movie? End-of-the-month movie party. 🎬📚

The best part? Homeschool moms win too because suddenly book club becomes literature, reading comprehension, discussion, writing prompts, themed activities, and a full novel study without adding one more thing to the schedule.

Day 3 of Camp Half-Blood was a lighter day because life still happens and homeschool has to fit into real life sometimes. We had errands to run, but we still made progress through chapters 8–11 of The Lightning Thief, did copy work, colored Uranus, and tackled our math lesson with time to the minute and time word problems.

One thing I’ve loved for years in our homeschool? Audiobooks. If you’ve been around for a while, you already know I’m a big @audible fan because it gives us so much flexibility. We can pick up right where we left off whether we’re listening on my phone, in the car, on Alexa, or around the house. It makes it so easy to keep learning going even on busy days.
