DIY Quill Pen
Materials Needed
- Feathers (goose or turkey feathers work well)
- Small craft knife or scissors
- Ink or dark-colored liquid (such as diluted paint or natural dye)
- Paper or parchment-like sheets
- Optional: Candle or lighter (for singeing the quill)

Step 1: Feather Selection (5 minutes) Start by gathering the feathers. Look for feathers from geese or turkeys, as they have sturdy shafts that are ideal for creating quill pens. Ensure the feathers are clean and in good condition.
Step 2: Preparing the Quill (10 minutes) Using a small craft knife or scissors, carefully trim the tip of the feather at an angle. This angled cut will create a nib, which allows the ink to flow onto the paper smoothly. Exercise caution and consider adult supervision, especially if using sharp tools.
Step 3: Strengthening the Quill (Optional, 5 minutes) For added durability, you can singe the tip of the quill over a candle flame or with a lighter. Hold the quill above the flame for a few seconds, rotating it to singe the cut end gently. This process strengthens the quill and helps prevent fraying.
Step 4: Ink Preparation (5 minutes) Pour your preferred ink or dark-colored liquid into small containers. If you want to try making natural ink, experiment with crushing berries, charcoal, or other suitable materials and mix them with water.
