Magnetic Letter Match Up
Materials: Magnetic letters, metal tray or refrigerator.
Magnetic letters are one of my favorite reading manipulatives and they’re perfect for hands-on learning. Spread the magnetic letters on a metal tray or your fridge. Write simple CVC words on a whiteboard or paper. Ask your child to match the magnetic letters to these words. This activity helps with letter recognition and understanding word structures.
To make it a more independent activity, I like to use these CVC objects. They are magnetic and can go write on the fridge with your letters. You can also add them to a sensory bin with word cards to make it a matching game.
Differentiation Tip: For advanced learners, include digraphs or blend letters to form more complex words.

CVC WORD BUILDING BLOCKS
Materials: Alphabet blocks or Lego with letters written on them.
Transform playtime into learning time! Use alphabet blocks or Lego pieces with letters written on them to build CVC words. It’s a tactile and visually stimulating activity that encourages children to form words by stacking or connecting the blocks.
Differentiation Tip: Challenge older kids by timing the activity or having them create sentences with the words they build.
WORD FAMILY GARDEN
Materials: Flower pot cutouts and craft sticks
Create a “word family garden” sensory bin. Get a shallow bin, tub, or box to hold everything. Add a filler like shredded paper, beans, sand, or mulch. Write the word family on the paper pot and glue the CVC flowers to the popsicle sticks. Stick the flower sticks into the ground (paper filler) and let them match the CVC word to the correct word family pot.
Differentiation Tip: Focus on one vowel sound at a time. As the become more confident, add a combination of vowel sounds into the mix. Remember, less is more when you’re starting out.

PHONICS FISHING GAME
Materials: Fish cutouts with CVC words, small magnets or paperclips, a small fishing rod with a magnet.
Make fish cutouts, laminate and glue a small magnet or put a paperclip on each one. Use a small rod with a magnet to ‘catch’ the fish. Once a fish is caught, have your child read the word aloud. This activity is fantastic for developing fine motor skills and phonetic awareness.
Differentiation Tip: For older kids, include fish with sight words or words with silent letters.
CVC WORD SCAVENGER HUNT
Materials: CVC words written on index cards
Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Hide CVC word cards around your home or garden. Give your child a list of the words to find. As they find each word, they can read it aloud and check it off their list. This active game is great for kinesthetic learners.
Differentiation Tip: For advanced learners, hide clues instead of words, leading to the location of the next word.
Teaching CVC words doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these fun and simple activities, you can turn learning into an adventure for your early readers. Remember, the key is to keep the activities light, engaging, and suited to your child’s learning pace. Happy teaching, and let’s make learning a joyful journey!
